When Are Extractions Necessary?

February 16th, 2022

Keeping the natural smile as healthy as possible is the main goal of Dr. Kim Ahuja, which is why patients are often surprised when our dentist recommends extracting a tooth. Extractions are a treatment of last resort, used only in certain circumstances. By knowing what these circumstances are, you can better discuss your treatment options with Dr. Ahuja.

RECURRENT TOOTH DECAY

Tooth decay is one of the most common dental health concerns a patient can face. As such, there are different methods of treatment to restore a decayed tooth and avoid future occurrences of cavities.

However, there are some circumstances when a tooth continues to experience infections after going through all other treatment options. A tooth may be damaged in such a way that severe decay will happen regardless of treatment option availability. In these circumstances, that tooth simply cannot be saved. The infection’s continued presence within the smile only threatens your oral and systemic health by allowing that decay to spread to the rest of the smile. An extraction is the only treatment that can truly keep you healthy.

WISDOM TEETH

Wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to erupt in the smile, usually doing so after the jaw has finished growing. This means that they are entering a smile that does not have room for them. Even if they avoid impaction, these molars may still cause misalignment of the other teeth. In addition to increasing the likelihood of tooth decay by causing malocclusion, the wisdom teeth can also rub against and wear down adjacent teeth.

Our Sugar Land dentist can extract non-impacted wisdom teeth to halt and help reverse these symptoms. Once the third molars are removed from the smile, your teeth can be realigned more effectively into a healthier position with orthodontic treatment. Your other molars are also spared from being worn down prematurely.

IMPACTED TEETH

Impaction refers to situations where a tooth grows into the smile at an angle, causing it to be trapped under the teeth and other gums. Wisdom teeth are particularly likely to become impacted, although any adult tooth can be affected by the condition. In this position, the impacted tooth rubs against the other erupted teeth and can wear them down to the point of needing extraction. Additionally, an impacted tooth often only partially erupts, trapping most of the tooth’s cusp underneath the gums. The pocket between gum and tooth allows food debris and bacteria to be trapped, making gum disease and tooth decay extremely likely to happen.

In order to save the rest of the smile, impacted teeth must be extracted. Dr. Ahuja coordinates with an oral surgeon to make sure your impacted primary and wisdom teeth are comfortably and successfully removed.
