SLEEP APNEA TREATMENTS IN SUGARLAND
It isn’t uncommon for you to miss a good night’s rest every once in a while. Stress and anxiety can cause an occasional night of fitful sleep. Some people, however, rarely experience restful sleep and they may not even be aware of it. Sleep apnea is the condition that causes frequent interruptions in a person’s slumber and it can lead to serious health risks.
SYMPTOMS OF SLEEP APNEA
Everybody goes through different stages while sleeping. If you are waking up more than five times every hour, then your body may not successfully complete each stage, depriving itself of vital rest. Signs of sleep apnea are:
- Loud snoring
- Drowsiness upon waking
- Dry mouth
- Morning headaches
- Irritability during the day
Sleeping is the body’s way of recharging its batteries, strengthening the immune system, and healing itself. When deprived of proper sleep, your physical and mental health suffer. It can compromise your job performance and impact your relationships.
SERIOUS HEALTH RISKS WITH SLEEP APNEA
Some of the serious effects of sleep apnea on the body are:
- Heart disease
- Obesity
- Stroke
- Heart arrhythmias
- Depression
- High blood pressure
Those with sleep apnea are three times more likely to suffer a stroke.
TYPES OF SLEEP APNEA AND TREATMENT METHODS
There are two kinds of sleep apnea: Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) and Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). CSA is a neurological issue where the brain stops sending signals to the muscles. CSA is treated with medication. OSA is what the names suggest, an obstruction in the airway passage while sleeping, usually caused by the relaxation of soft tissues and muscles in the mouth and throat.
Patients with either OSA or CSA are often prescribed a CPAP machine which stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. These are an effective way for many people to treat their sleep apnea, but others find them cumbersome and uncomfortable.
There are also orthodontic devices your dentist can custom design for you that keep the jaw in proper position, so the airways do not become obstructed.
