Gum recession

February 16th, 2022

Gum recession is one of the changes that usually happen as a part of the ageing process. We can face what we call “long in the tooth” as our gum line gets thinner and the teeth exposed. Gum recession occurs due to progressive erosion in the gum which may be hardly noticed as the changes are measured in millimeters. Let us now see how common gum recession is and the possible causes that may lead to this condition.

Although gum recession is a normal process that may relate to aging process, we still can do something to prevent it. There are several factors that play a role in causing erosions of the gum line and most of these factors can be prevented. The most common factors involved in this include:

  • Teeth grinding or clenching.
  • Lack of good brushing and bad hygiene.
  • Hard flossing of the teeth.
  • Smoking tobacco
  • Overconsumption of whitening products.
  • Drinking too much sports and energy drinks that contain whitening products.

The good news is that these factors are all preventable. You can take precautions and lower the chances of getting your gum damaged. For example, you can use a mouth guard if you grind your teeth at night. If you don’t have good oral hygiene or brush your teeth regularly, you should consider this and talk with your dentist about the best technique to brush your teeth. When you floss your teeth, don’t do it hard to an extent that makes you bleed. Flossing is important to your oral health but you should do it gently to avoid injuring your gum. What’s more, stop smoking, consuming tobacco or drinking energy drinks as they can lead to several health drawbacks while worsening your dental health. Whitening products are not as beneficial as you persuaded by TV commercials and online promotions. If you depend on these products to whiten your teeth on a regular basis, you should stop this immediately.

Finally, you should visit your dentist in order to assess your gum health and know whether you are encountering a rapid gum recession or not. Regular visits to a dentist can allow a continuous monitoring to your gum health and may slow down the process of gum recession. Your dentist can measure the recessions and check for the depth of your gum pockets which are both important to monitor your gum health. You should talk to your dentist about your concerns as well. Be sure that your dentist will be happy to know that you care for your teeth.
It is also important to know that tooth sensitivity is an early sign of gum recession. So, if you have sensitive teeth, consider it as an alarming sign to take care of your gums. Make sure you avoid the unhealthy habits mentioned above. Another precious advice is to gather a good knowledge of your teeth health, avoid harmful behavior and you will have good oral health.
